SEO, or search engine optimization, can be a bit of a complicated mystery to many business owners.

What is SEO exactly? How does it help? What does Google like and can I REALLY make it to Page 1?

Well, let's start with the basics!

Why Is Search Engine Optimization Important?

Search engines are a very common place for your customers to search for a product, service, or business. Though there are several different search engines out there, including Yahoo! and Bing, Google is the number one search engine with 3.5 billion searches performed PER day. The catch? If you aren't showing up on page one for the search term that your customers are typing in to find your service or business, you won't see much traffic at all from Google. This is where SEO comes in.

What Is Search Engine Optimization?

In order to display the most relevant results to its users, Google has come up with a complex system of algorithms that it uses to figure out where each website will be listed, in relation to other similar websites, for a specific search term. The numerical position in which a website shows up for a keyword is often referred to as a website's rank. It has been documented that the higher your page ranks, the more traffic you will receive. In fact, studies have shown that the number one position gets an average of 33% of search traffic!

What Is the Difference Between SEO and SEM?

The function of both SEM and SEO is to increase website visibility in search engines. Google and other popular engines are primarily concerned with delivering the best content their users. SEO focuses on making sure your company’s website is in alignment with what search engines want.

SEM relies on creating enticing content in paid ads and bidding on specific keywords that your prospective customers will most likely enter into search engines.  The benefits of driving traffic to your online properties utilizing both SEO and SEM include increased conversion and click-through rates.

How Do I Get On the First Page of Search Results?

So what types of things factor into Google's algorithms to determine rank, you ask? There are around 200 ranking factors in total that Google looks at to determine which websites will be at the top of the page. Listed below are a few very important factors that Google looks at, which our company routinely assesses for our clients.

  1. Is your website mobile friendly? Google heavily favors responsive websites and actually penalizes the sites that are not designed with mobile viewing in mind. This is because over 50% of searches in the U.S. alone are done via a mobile device.
  2. Is your content relevant and well-written? Extensive keyword research should be done before content is added to a website to ensure that it is properly optimized with just the right balance of keywords and relevant information. Google loves informative content, and the more helpful and accurate the writing is, the more your visitors will appreciate it, and the higher rank your website will ultimately achieve.
  3. How old is your domain name? The age of your domain can make a big difference in rank. Usually, domains that have been registered longer, tend to rank more easily than a newer domain.
  4. How many inbound links are pointing to your website? Google considers a website more trustworthy and will give it more authority if it detects other trustworthy websites linking to it.
  5. How many listings does your business have in directories across the internet? These listings are known as citations. When your business has lots of citations in various directories, Google tends to give it a boost in rank.

Keep in mind that rank can quickly fluctuate as Google constantly updates its algorithms. If you want to stay ahead of the curve, it is important to hire an experienced company to manage your SEO.
